Geranium essential oil is extracted through steam distillation from the leaves of the geranium plant. The oil obtained is of clear, pale yellow to olive green color, and has a thin consistency. The aromatic description is listed as sweet, floral, minty fresh, with a fruity note. When extracted from the Pelargonium graveolens plant, the oil is rose-scented, and from the Pelargonium odorantissimum variety, it has a slight apple undertone.

Geranium essential oil has a strong initial aroma, and is used as a middle note in perfumery. The oil itself is considered a natural perfume, which is also often used in soaps and detergents. Though non-toxic, as with all essential oils, it should be diluted at 2.5% in a carrier oil, usually 15 drops of essential oil to one ounce of carrier oil. Scent can linger for hours.

Main areas of growth and oil production are Africa, Reunion Island, Russia, and China. From Russia and China, it has a greener, fresh rosy aroma, while it is heavier and darker from Egypt and Reunion. When extracted from the Bourbon geranium, which is exclusive to Reunion Island, it is a premium perfume oil.

Geranium essential oil has anti-fungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, and diuretic properties. Possible uses are for acne, cellulites, lice, menopause, dry skin, and oily skin. Other indicated uses are for burns, eczema, edema, fluid retention, neuralgia, PMS symptoms, including swollen breasts, and poor circulation, rheumatism, and tonsillitis. It is also considered one of the best skincare oils. Well tolerated and non-toxic, it is recommended for its balancing effect for dry, oily, and congested skin.

Though obtained from leaves, geranium essential oil is comparable to floral oils in its aroma and effects. On an emotional level, it promotes stability and balance. It can be blended in tranquility blends with oils of lavender, bergamot orange, and rose. It also works on the adrenal cortex, which helps with hormone balance.

Under good storage conditions, geranium essential oil can be kept for 5 years, its expiry term. Oil should be stored in amber-colored, well-sealed glass bottles, in a dry and well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.

Caution should be observed when using geranium essential oil to avoid dermatitis in hypersensitive persons. Its use should also be avoided during pregnancy, especially because of its antispasmodic and hormone balancing effects.
