Also known as Olibanum, frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia plant. The Boswellia plant is grown from eastern Africa, through southern Arabia, to north western India. Frankincense essential oil is obtained from a selection of Boswellia plants. Boswellia carterii and boswellia frereana are from Somalia, boswellia sacra is from southern Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman, while the boswellia serrata is from India.

Frankincense oil is of light, pale yellow to greenish yellow, and has a thin consistency. Its aromatic description is listed as fresh, woody, balsamic, slightly spicy and fruity, and peppery. It has a mild to medium initial aroma, and is used as a base note in perfumery. It is a great fixative and is popular in the perfumery world where it is used to bind other compounds together and thus make fragrance last longer.

Frankincense essential oil has anti inflammatory, antiseptic, antidepressant, cicatrizing, cytophylactic, immuno-stimulant, sedative, emmenagogue, and tonic-digestive properties. Possible uses are for anxiety, asthma, bronchitis, extreme coughing, scars, stress, and stretch marks.

It is considered a very good oil for skin use, especially for aging skin as it works on wrinkles. It is also indicated for dry and oily skin, as well as for acne and scars.

Frankincense essential oil deepens breathing and regulates mucus secretion, and is best inhaled for its many benefits on the respiratory system.

Frankincense essential oil is also widely used in meditation and spiritual work. Its centering aroma slows the nervous system and promotes feelings of calm and introspection. It is best used as a burning scent for such purposes.

The oil can be kept for a shelf life of 3-5 years under proper storage conditions. It should be kept in well-sealed bottles at 5-25 degrees Celsius, in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct heat and sunlight.
