The Boswellia plant is grown from eastern Africa, through southern Arabia, to north western India. Frankincense essential oil is obtained from a selection of Boswellia plants. Boswellia carterii and boswellia frereana are from Somalia, boswellia sacra is from southern Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Oman, while the boswellia serrata is from India.

Frankincense oil is of light, pale yellow to greenish yellow, and has a thin consistency. Its aromatic description is listed as fresh, woody, balsamic, slightly spicy and fruity, and peppery. It has a mild to medium initial aroma, and is used as a base note in perfumery. It is a great fixative and is popular in the perfumery world where it is used to bind other compounds together and thus make fragrance last longer.
